History[]

Stephen had originally seen vlogs of people who sit in front of their computers and talk to the camera, and he thought it was terribly boring. In November 2009, however, he saw a few vlogs where people were leaving the house and not simply talking to webcams. He decided that once he went home for winter break that he would start "StephenVlog", and attempt to film his life for a living.

In his first video, Day Zero, Stephen explains that he doesn't know how long he'll be doing "vlogging" for. He has been doing it every day for over thirteen years now. On Day 364, he received his YouTube partnership. There are now over 5,000 StephenVlog days (and counting).

On February 27th, 2023, StephenVlog hit 100,000 subscribers.

StephenPlays[]

History[]

Stephen's original exposure to Let's Plays was through Emile, a personal friend of his. They had met on EarthBound fansite Starmen.net in 2005, and always kept in touch. Emile would frequently bring projects and episodes to Stephen for critique before releasing them to the public, as Stephen was an experienced editor. Emile has also asked Stephen to design logos for own his channel based on the Let's Play he's currently doing.

In late 2010, after successfully vlogging for one year, Stephen decided he would start his own Let's Play channel "StephenPlays" in February 2011. In September 2011, he joined The Game Station network.

On August 10th, 2015, StephenPlays hit 100,000 subscribers.

A complete list of Stephen's Let's Plays can be found here.

Other Projects on StephenPlays[]

  • Memorable Moments - Highlights from favorite StephenPlays episodes, debuting every Monday through Thursday and one every day in the month of May.
  • Demo Fridays - A series where Stephen plays the demo of a game and gives his thoughts as he plays.
  • First20 - A series where Stephen (and sometimes company) play(s) the first 20 minutes or so of a game, and then give their early impressions of it.

Other Information[]

Devotion to Fans[]

Stephen has attracted attention to his channels by acknowledging that he does his best to read every comment posted, and will personally reply to any comment that requires a response. He likes to be easily reached by anyone, and reads and replies to all tweets he receives. On February 11th, 2012, he uploaded a Network Spotlight video for TGS, predominantly featuring his fans.

Skyrim LP[]

One of his completed LPs, Skyrim, focused on putting the "let's" back in "let's play". Unlike most Let's Plays, which are completely pre-recorded, Stephen's Skyrim LP was recorded one at a time, giving the audience time to comment on the video and offer suggestions, advice, or pointing out things he may have missed. Roughly a year later, he returned to this one at a time Let's Play format in Fallout 4.

Collaborations[]

Stephen doesn't normally do collaborations, but has done several gaming videos with fellow LP-ers, such as Emile, Masae, and Josh. He has also made several appearances on The Runaway Guys alongside his wife Mallory, including guest appearances in Let's Plays and having a major involvement in The Runaway Guys Colosseum via creating several notable bumpers, including The Lamp and The Table.

Tools[]

Stephen's Vlogs were primarily shot on the Flip Ultra HD camera until Day 899 of the vlog, when Stephen switched to using the Canon PowerShot Elph 300 HS. On Day 2320, it was retired, and Stephen replaced it with the Panasonic Lumix ZS100 as the everyday vlog camera. Stephen's LPs are recorded using Screenflow (Mac recordings), Fraps (Windows recordings), and the Black Magic Intensity Pro (console games). Stephen used to use a Hackintosh computer with OS X Yosemite, as well as a 2016 Macbook Pro, but now uses a 2020 iMac. He does all video editing in Final Cut Pro X.
